Tree Neutral® uses the data from Conservatree.org to calculate the number of trees used to make paper. Our licensees calculate the amount of paper they use, then convert it into the corresponding number of trees.

The Tree Neutral® program creates guidelines that are unique to each company or individual that engages in the program and that are aimed at offsetting paper usage by planting trees in direct proportion to the number of trees consumed.

Tree Neutral® Guidelines

Guidelines are created for Tree Neutral® participants based on statistics that come from organizations such as Conservatree.  For example, did you know that it takes 24 trees to replace the number of trees consumed by one ton of non-recycled office paper?  Or that it takes 6 trees to replace the number of trees consumed by using one hundred reams of copy paper?*  Visit Conservatree for more information and for more of their statistics.

The following are examples of guidelines created for certain types of businesses:

  • A publisher that wanted to use the Tree Neutral® mark and logo on their books was required to plant 24 trees for each ton of paper used to print books with the mark and logo.
  • A company that wanted to offset tree consumption from office paper usage was asked to plant 6 trees for every 100 reams of copy paper.
